How do I pick the right therapist?
Choosing the right therapist is an important decision, as a good fit can greatly impact the success of therapy. Knowing what you address in therapy such as anxiety, depression, or relational issues, would be helpful to looking for a therapist who specializes in the areas you are seeking help with. Many therapist offer a free 15 minutes consultation to see if they are a right fit clinician for your need.
What happens in therapy?
Therapy, or psychotherapy, is a collaborative process between a therapist and a client that aims to improve mental health and well-being. The specific details of what happens in therapy can vary based on the individual therapist’s approach, the client’s needs and goals, and the type of therapy being used.
Are you allowed to share anything we talk about in therapy with others?
In a therapy setting, therapists are bound by strict ethical guidelines and laws that protect client confidentiality. Therapists are not allowed to disclose any information shared by a client during therapy sessions without the client’s consent, except in certain limited circumstances. These exceptions typically involve situations where there is imminent risk of harm to the client or others, or when required by law (e.g., suspected child abuse).
Remember that therapy is meant to be a safe and confidential space where you can share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly and honestly. Your therapist is there to support you and keep your information confidential to the best of their ability within the bounds of ethical and legal standards.
How long does a therapy session last and how often are sessions?
The duration and frequency of therapy sessions can vary depending on the therapist, the client’s needs, and the type of therapy being used. Therapy sessions typically last between 45 to 60 minutes, although some therapists may offer longer sessions if needed.
The frequency of therapy sessions can vary based on the client’s needs and goals. Initially, sessions may occur weekly or bi-weekly to establish a therapeutic relationship and work on identifying and addressing the client’s concerns. As therapy progresses and the client begins to make progress, sessions may be scheduled less frequently (e.g., every two weeks or monthly).
How long will I need to be in therapy?
The overall duration of therapy can vary depending on the client’s goals, the complexity of their concerns, and their progress in therapy. Some clients may benefit from short-term therapy (e.g., 6-12 sessions) to address specific issues or develop coping skills, while others may engage in longer-term therapy to work through deeper emotional or psychological challenges.
I am unsure if I want or need therapy, is this normal?
It is completely normal to feel unsure about whether you want or need therapy. Making the decision to seek therapy can be a significant one, and it’s common to have doubts or ambivalence about starting the process. Think about what you would like to achieve through therapy. Are you looking to improve your mental health, build coping skills, process difficult emotions, or work through past traumas? Being clear about your goals can help you determine if therapy is the right step for you.
Therapy comes in many different forms, including individual therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, and online therapy. Take some time to research different therapy modalities and find one that aligns with your preferences and needs. Finding the right fit with a therapist and therapy approach is key to a successful therapeutic experience.
How do we get started and what does a first session look like?
The first therapy session, also known as the initial consultation or intake session, is typically focused on getting to know one another, discussing your reasons for seeking therapy, and setting goals for your therapy journey. The therapist will ask you to share some background information about yourself, such as your personal history, family dynamics, relationships, work/school, and any significant life events or challenges that have led you to seek therapy and the reason for seeking therapy. You will have the opportunity to discuss the reasons why you are seeking therapy, including any emotional or mental health concerns, symptoms, stressors, or goals you have for therapy. The therapist may ask questions to help clarify your needs and determine how they can best support you.
